The irony of the Nike Major Threat ad

It seems Nike has used the image of the famous Minor Threat "complete discography" in an ad. I can understand Ian MacKaye and Dischord Records being mad, but what I cannot take is the irony of the situation.

If you open up the Minor Threat Discography disc, you will know what I mean. Sure, it is wrong for Nike to steal, but the irony of one of the members wearing Nike in the original may shed light on why this was done in the first place.

One can't help but notice the irony of an "upside down" or inverted crate with the Pepsi name, and in clear day is the famous Nike swoosh.

Now, I know it's wrong for Nike to abuse the classic cover, but I found this irony a bit funny. On to Nike "Major Threat" ad.

I bought this album in the late eighties and this is the original copy. The pics are still there.

MINOR THREAT VS NIKE MAJOR THREAT

How does Dischord feel about this? Here is a quote from the news about it:

No, they stole it and we're not happy about it. Nike is a giant corporation which is attempting to manipulate the alternative skate culture to create an even wider demand for their already ubiquitous brand. Nike represents just about the antithesis of what Dischord stands for and it makes me sick to my stomach to think they are using this explicit imagery to fool kids into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike's mission. It's disgusting.

At the time of publishing, I am the first person on the internet to point this out. You heard it first, here at Hollywood Punk.
